Walk into any beauty aisle or scroll through any skincare store, and you'll see a wall of complex ingredient names. Some are miracle workers. Some are marketing hype. And some are best avoided altogether.
This guide will help you understand what's worth your money — and what isn't.
Ingredients Worth Looking For
Hyaluronic Acid
A hydration powerhouse. It holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water and plumps up dry, tired skin. Great for all skin types, especially dehydrated skin.
Vitamin C
A brightening antioxidant that fades dark spots, evens skin tone, and protects against environmental damage. Best used in the morning under sunscreen.
Retinol (Vitamin A)
The gold standard for anti-aging. It boosts collagen, smooths fine lines, and improves skin texture. Start with a low concentration (0.2–0.3%) and use it only at night.
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
A multitasker that regulates oil, minimizes pores, brightens skin, and strengthens the skin barrier. Gentle enough for daily use.
Salicylic Acid
A beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that dissolves oil inside pores. Excellent for acne-prone and oily skin. Use 2–3 times a week.
Ceramides
Lipids that form your skin's natural barrier. Essential for dry, sensitive, or compromised skin.
Ingredients to Use With Caution
Alcohol (Denatured Alcohol)
Small amounts are fine as a preservative, but high concentrations can dry out and irritate your skin over time.
Fragrance (Synthetic)
A common irritant. If you have sensitive or reactive skin, look for fragrance-free formulas.
Sulfates (SLS/SLES)
Harsh surfactants that can strip your skin's natural oils. Gentler alternatives like coco-glucoside work just as well.
Parabens
Controversial preservatives. While generally considered safe at low levels, many clean beauty brands — including The Highlighter — formulate without them.
Essential Oils
Natural doesn't always mean safe. Some essential oils (like citrus and lavender) can cause irritation or photosensitivity.
How to Read a Skincare Label
1. Ingredients are listed from highest to lowest concentration. If an active ingredient is listed near the bottom, there's not much of it in the product.
2. The first 5 ingredients usually make up 70–80% of the formula.
3. "Fragrance" or "Parfum" can contain dozens of undisclosed chemicals.
Our Philosophy at The Highlighter
We formulate with purpose. Every ingredient we use is there for a reason — to hydrate, protect, or transform your skin. No filler. No gimmicks. No ingredient added just to look good on the label.
If an ingredient isn't doing something meaningful for your skin, we don't use it.
That's our promise. Clean, honest, effective skincare — always.
